…As he listened to the caller, Nick's eyes widened in shock, and his jaw tightened. Once, he glanced at her, but she couldn't read his expression. She held her breath.
Suddenly, he hung up, then stood beside the bed, his head bowed.
"Nick…" Leah began.
Slowly, he turned toward her. For a moment, he simply studied her features as if she were a stranger. Finally, he spoke, quietly, deadly. "Is there something you want to tell me?"
She nodded, but didn't move.
Nick came toward her, his face a deceptive calm, while his dark eyes blazed with suppressed fury and pain.
He stopped close to her, and Leah wanted to reach out to touch him, but didn't.
"Who is Kane Lambert?" He ground out the words as if it hurt him to speak them.
She gestured helplessly. "Can…can we sit down?" Leah knew her legs wouldn't hold her much longer.
When they were both seated on the bed, she said, "I don't know how to tell you, Nick." She could hear Kane's voice inside her head, taunting her.
"I want to hear it from you, Leah. Tell me he's lying…please." Torment radiated from his dark eyes.
She struggled to contain the sob that rose in her throat, nearly choking her. She needed his warmth to ward off the chill in her soul, but he offered no comfort. "I don't deserve you, Nick."
"Dammit, that's not what I asked you."
