"How's your ankle?" Alex asked guiltily. It was his fault she'd hurt it. More reason not to touch her again.

"It aches," Hallie said. "Alice bound it up with arnica. See?"

"Nice of her," Alex said carefully. Though the one she'd twisted was evidently swollen, Hallie's ankles were trim and pretty. Like the rest of her.

Hallie frowned slightly. She lifted the hem of her skirt higher, exposing a length of well-shaped calf. She indicated the delicate, beribboned shoes she wore. "Do you like my shoes?"

He nodded and shrugged. Thankfully the whisky was clearing from his brain, but he still had no idea why she was asking him about her clothes. "Yes. Very nice."

An incredible, sly smile stretched across the mouth he wanted so badly to kiss. Slowly, deliberately, Hallie kicked off one shoe. With her bare foot she then nudged the other shoe off until she stood completely unshod.

A realization dawned in him. "You're not leaving, are you?"
