“If you came for a good laugh, I hope you weren’t disappointed.” She turned on her heels, amber eyes sizing him up as he stood there leaning against her post.
Her face was a stone mask of disapproval, but deep in those eyes Dane still spied fragments of hurt. It had to have bruised her ego even more to discover Stan’s little antics were the result of a fifty dollar bet—not a sincere response to her grandmother’s ad.
He cleared his throat, eying the bat in her hand. “You damn near scared the guy shitless. You’re gonna give someone a heart attack one of these days.”
“I don’t care,” she snapped in irritation. He didn’t believe her. She was trying too hard to convince him. “Maybe the word will get out and these jerks will finally stop bothering me.”
He sighed heavily. “This probably doesn’t make sense to you, but these guys are just answering an ad—”
“That guy was trying to win a bet.” She threw up her free hand in the direction of where Stan had just driven away. “I’m the town joke, Dane, don’t you get it?”
“You have to admit that things like this…” He again lowered his gaze to the bat. “…just provide more punch lines, Piper.”
“I don’t care.” She lifted her chin indignantly. “I’ll pound the next guy who comes here. And I’m not kidding.”
He chuckled quietly. “No you won’t.” With an unflagging grin, he moved toward her. She took a quick step back but, in one languid move, he caught the bat and twisted it out of her grasp.
“Hey!” she cried angrily, her eyes blazing. “Give it back!”
He shook his head. “I don’t think so.” Eying the scrawled autograph, he lifted a brow. “Jimmy Mackey? Never heard of him. You said he’s your favorite player?”
“Manitou Springs Little League,” she retorted, reaching for the bat. “Now give it back.”
He laughed, still shaking his head. “I’m not that stupid.” Then he tossed it over the porch banister. It fell between two hibernating rose bushes with a satisfying thud.
Turning back to Piper, he studied her with measured caution. If she’d already read his article, she certainly was handling it well. Judging by the way she’d nearly flattened Stanley, the chance that she might handle his article well was slim to none. Which only meant one thing—she hadn’t read the paper yet.
Her hair was tousled, her eyes wide and filled with a vulnerability he found surprising. He wasn’t sure which was sexier—vulnerable Piper or ferocious Piper. Maybe he liked both.
Her lush lower lip trembled and she ran her tongue over the surface to moisten it. That’s when Dane knew he wasn’t going to bring up the article in the Gazette. He also knew this woman was becoming more than an addiction. He couldn’t be near her without wanting to touch her. Taste her. Make love to her.
God help him…he was either an idiot or just desperate and horny.
Her lip quavered again. Still, she lifted a finger and, as if reading his mind, strongly warned, “Don’t.”
“Don’t what? Come closer?” He let a sly curve tug at his mouth. “Afraid, Piper? Need a baseball bat? Or a garden hose? How about a broom?”
She pressed her lips together, shaking her head. “That’s not funny.”
He backed her into the same corner of her porch where she’d held Stan prisoner. Eventually she had nowhere to go, her back pressed against the house, her right hand gripping the curved banister.
“Cut it out, Dane,” she again cautioned in an unsteady tone.
Heavily lashed lids shadowed eyes that had suddenly darkened with a tantalizing mixture of passion, anticipation and fear. The flecks of gold in that amber hue were entrancing. She sank her teeth into her bottom lip and her breathing came in ragged gasps.
“Your friends tell me you’re like a Mack truck without brakes speeding down a hill…” The deep rumble of his voice was almost unrecognizable and more of a growl. Dane was in way over his head now. Reason didn’t matter anymore. Reason couldn’t compete with the crazy feeling that he just had to have her.
